“Fears About Artificial Intelligence Across 20 Countries and Six Domains of Application” is the title of a research project led by Mengchen Dong, Jane Rebecca Conway, and Jean-François Bonnefon, supported by the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse, University of Toulouse Capitole. It investigates fears surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) by looking at six key professions—physicians, judges, managers, social care providers, religious figures, and journalists—to show how cultural differences and psychological perceptions influence the acceptance of advanced technologies. This study collected data from 10,000 participants across 20 nations, offering valuable insights for entrepreneurs and corporate leaders who want to understand preferences and concerns with a global, strategically relevant perspective. In practical terms, AI refers to computer systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence—such as decision-making, speech recognition, and problem-solving—by processing large volumes of data with sophisticated algorithms (sequences of instructions that teach machines how to interpret or act on information).

Concerns surrounding Artificial Intelligence differ widely across professions, as each role embodies distinct societal expectations when algorithms are introduced into positions traditionally held by humans. This research found that public opinion in the 20 surveyed countries—including the United States, China, India, Italy, Japan, and Turkey—varies widely in interpreting and accepting automated systems in these roles. In some settings, using AI in courtrooms appears more concerning than adopting it in hospitals; in others, the response is entirely different. A key factor is the cultural context, which shapes historical narratives and sensitivities around technology. In India and the United States, for instance, the results show notably high fear indices, often exceeding 64 on a 0–100 scale. Conversely, in Turkey, Japan, and China, these values drop below 53, highlighting a more detached relationship with AI—although that does not necessarily mean there is no concern. It may stem from familiarity with social robots or confidence in government policies that regulate algorithmic activities. Significantly, the findings confirm that these national differences are far from random: the shared values of each society exert a strong influence on how AI is perceived. Western countries often express concern about whether an AI-driven judge can deliver fair and transparent decisions, whereas Asian nations may display greater trust, focusing less on potential mistakes committed by automated systems. For a business leader, this suggests that implementing AI in management roles will not be perceived the same everywhere. An employee management software package that suits the U.S. market may require different design and communication strategies when introduced to China. For technical teams, understanding how to integrate AI into roles requiring emotional or social awareness becomes even more crucial.


Psychological and Professional Perspectives on AI Adoption

A central part of the study investigates which human and psychological traits respondents consider necessary for each of the six professions. Eight qualities emerged as particularly important: empathy, honesty, tolerance, fairness, competence, determination, intelligence, and imagination. Depending on the profession, one or more of these traits become paramount. For instance, a physician is expected to show genuine empathy and strong problem-solving skills, while a judge is often seen as someone who must demonstrate

impartiality and expertise. A manager, in many cultures, needs intelligence combined with decisiveness, and a social care worker should display empathy and tolerance.


Differences also arise at a cultural level: some Western nations rank fairness as a top requirement for judges, while other regions emphasize technical competence. In certain Asian societies, imagination is valued less for religious leaders, whereas sincerity and moral integrity matter more. The research confirms that cultural backgrounds shape these expectations in ways that overshadow mere individual preference. Significantly, the study also reveals how people judge AI’s ability to possess qualities like warmth, sincerity, or moral correctness. Many participants readily acknowledge a machine’s computational strength and high intelligence but doubt its creativity or empathy. These viewpoints become especially sharp when individuals compare the ideal traits of a specific profession with the perceived capabilities of AI at its best. Hence, if people believe that a manager’s most critical attribute is relational empathy, they might be skeptical that an algorithm can replicate it. On the other hand, if a profession is viewed as primarily analytical, resistance to AI might be lower.


The Match Model: Understanding Fear and Alignment in AI

The study goes beyond statistical description by proposing a mathematical model that attempts to explain the relationship between fear and the perceived alignment between the job’s requirements and AI’s attributes. Researchers refer to this alignment as “Match”: for each profession, they look at which of the eight key characteristics (empathy, honesty, tolerance, fairness, competence, determination, intelligence, imagination) the AI is believed capable of fulfilling. The more boxes checked, the higher the Match. Statistically, they express this as:

Fear = Match + (1|country/participant)

Here, “Fear” represents the level of concern about AI in a given professional domain, “Match” is the count of traits that AI is seen as covering, and “(1|country/participant)” reflects random variations at both national and individual levels. Findings suggest that when Match is high, fear ratings on the 0–100 scale tend to decrease.


The correlation is observable at an individual level and is even more pronounced when aggregated at the country level. If someone thinks AI is highly competent and intelligent but not empathetic or morally upright, the Match is incomplete. Consequently, in fields where empathy or moral clarity is critical—like the judiciary—people’s apprehensions increase. These insights hold strategic value for entrepreneurs who want to lessen AI-related anxieties by aligning the technology more closely with the psychological expectations of each role. In a workforce that prioritizes competence and determination over gentleness, for example, an AI manager may encounter fewer obstacles. Meanwhile, in a setting where empathy from a corporate leader is prized, an algorithm’s adoption could face resistance. Interestingly, this formula explains around 40% of national-level variations, although some countries—such as China, Japan, or Turkey—don’t follow the curve precisely. Local traditions and histories can influence how people perceive or downplay the risks of AI.


Fears About Artificial Intelligence: Analyzing Six Key Professions

Among the six professions studied, judges elicited the highest fear levels in almost all the 20 countries. Many respondents consider the human ability to understand emotional contexts and interpret fairness to be crucial capabilities they feel an advanced machine might not fully replicate. Individuals worry about whether an automated system could replicate existing biases or miss important emotional cues. From the perspective of a public official, introducing an AI to assist in court rulings demands not only technical transparency but a robust ethical framework to reassure citizens. For physicians, participants in multiple countries expressed mixed reactions: there is acknowledgment of an AI’s diagnostic speed and accuracy yet concern about losing the human touch of reassurance.


A possible solution for healthcare entrepreneurs is to blend AI-based tools with human practice, ensuring physicians remain the empathetic interface for patients. In managerial roles, some see AI as an impartial supervisor that can mitigate favoritism or bias. Others find it difficult to imagine a machine settling interpersonal conflicts or inspiring employees. Where workplace culture prioritizes measurable outcomes, AI is less worrisome; where people value relationship-building, skepticism grows. In social care, empathy and tolerance are frequently mentioned as nonnegotiable. While a smart system might improve logistical planning for home visits, it cannot replace the personal warmth that vulnerable individuals seek. Providers who rely on AI must clarify that human professionals remain at the center of care. Religious figures pose a special challenge: in parts of Asia, the prospect of a robot assisting a minister of faith seems less alarming, possibly because technology already has a symbolic place in various spiritual traditions. Elsewhere, people doubt that a machine can “have faith” or communicate genuine moral values. The institutional challenge is to show that AI can offer supportive information without intruding on matters of belief. Finally, journalists appear less dramatic in the results, though concerns persist about misinformation or automated content lacking human oversight. Media companies already employ AI to compile financial updates or weather forecasts, but many cultures still believe quality journalism demands human inquiry and creativity. For editorial leaders, this suggests combining automated coverage with thoughtful editorial control to ensure authenticity.


Acceptance of AI: Global Strategies and Challenges Surrounding Fears

The study underlines that AI acceptance does not hinge solely on widespread technology usage or efficiency. People weigh whether machines can address the psychological and cultural expectations tied to each role. Many fears revolve around the sense that AI lacks the “human touch,” prompting questions about empathy, intuition, and the ability to interpret nuances. Enterprises planning to deploy AI are therefore advised to analyze upfront which human factors are deemed most vital in the target market. Where direct interaction is culturally indispensable, chatbots should be paired with live agents, ensuring the automated system doesn’t entirely replace human contact. A real-world illustration is a customer service setup where an AI answers frequent queries but transitions to a human supervisor when empathy or complex judgment is required. The Match model is valuable because it highlights that entrepreneurs and executives should focus on both technical reliability and psychological alignment. If a culture sees certain traits as essential—and doubts AI can emulate them—fears tend to escalate. Clear communication, algorithmic transparency, and user-friendly design features can ease these anxieties. Nevertheless, managers need to respect cultural differences: a “one-size-fits-all” regulatory model designed in the West may be ineffective or even detrimental in places where AI is already integrated into daily life. In such regions, the conversation about potential risks takes on a different shape. A manager operating internationally should consider cultural localization, from interface language to ethical guidelines. On the technical side, researchers advocate for AI systems capable of presenting themselves with more nuanced human-like qualities—for instance, explaining the rationale behind decisions or simulating empathy within set boundaries. However, it’s important to avoid anthropomorphizing (attributing human emotions and thoughts to the algorithm) beyond what the technology can actually do. Straightforward communication about AI’s real capabilities and limitations helps manage unrealistic expectations and clarify that accountability ultimately resides with humans.

The data show that most worries focus not on the technology itself but on the perceived mismatch between AI’s capabilities and the core human qualities—empathy, honesty, creativity—expected in each profession. This dynamic varies substantially from one culture to another, underscoring the complexity of AI deployment in global settings.


For business leaders, these findings highlight strategic and practical considerations: regulations in healthcare, protocols in customer service, and acceptance in judicial or journalistic domains all depend on local ideas of trust and ethical accountability. Hospitals in some countries are already using diagnostic algorithms with great accuracy, and certain courts employ AI-powered tools to scan legal precedents. Yet national attitudes toward such developments differ widely, shaped by cultural narratives about technology’s role in human life. Ultimately, each region or profession demands a carefully tailored approach, striking a balance that respects local norms while highlighting AI’s genuine advantages. The study’s main contribution is revealing that anxiety toward AI in delicate job roles does not spring from mere ignorance or irrational fear. Rather, it arises from thoughtful concerns about the extent to which machines meet the deeply held human values that societies attach to specific jobs. In places where technology aligns more closely with these norms, acceptance is smoother; where there is a large gap, apprehension grows. For today’s executives, this calls for open dialogue about how AI can ethically and effectively fit into the community where it’s deployed—eschewing inflated promises while showcasing the real benefits of innovation.
